With these additional cases, DeWitt Co has had a total of 2568 cases; Piatt Co has had a total of 2528 cases. There have now been a total of 36 deaths in DeWitt Co and 14 deaths in Piatt Co due to COVID-19.

There has been growing concern regarding the Delta and now the Omicron strain of the COVID-19 virus.  We do not have adequate data at this time to determine if any of the active cases are from these strains.  Delta has been detected in our jurisdiction.  The Omicron strain was detected in IL on 12/7/2021. Vaccination remains the best option to protect oneself against COVID-19. As scientists scramble to understand fully the effect of vaccination status on the new Omicron variant, we have recent information from Pfizer suggesting that booster shots can help protect against the new Omicron variant. In addition, “breakthrough” cases are happening.  In those rare incidents where a breakthrough case occurs, they tend to be less severe due to the vaccination status of the individual. Pfizer has announced booster shots for those aged 12-17 are now available.

Active cases are growing exponentially over the past several weeks.  At our highest, our two counties registered 253 cases total in early November of 2020.  We now are seeing over 300 active cases this week.  Our contact tracing functions are ramping back up.  While we re-focus our efforts on contact tracing, please expect a delay in response time.

Both DeWitt and Piatt counties are on the state WARNING LIST for COVID-19. Incidence rates remain very high.  The county warning list metrics are found here:
